Former Hibs and Rangers star lands first managerial role with struggling Northern Irish side

Former Hibernian star Dean Shiels has landed his first role in management after taking over at Northern Irish Premiership basement club Dungannon Swifts.

The 36-year-old had assisted dad Kenny in the Northern Irish women's national setup, helping the side reach their first ever play-off for a major tournament finals in April.

The forward scored 31 times in 145 games for the men in green and white after being brought to Easter Road from Arsenal by Tony Mowbray in 2004, later turning out for Kilmarnock, Rangers and Dunfermline Athletic.

He also lifted the League Cup with the Easter Road side in 2007, later repeating the feat with Killie in 2012.

Dungannon parted company with manager Kris Lindsay last month and are winless in six games having been thrashed 4-1 by Warrenpoint Town on Tuesday.

But Shiels insisted he was up for the challenge of dragging the club of the bottom of the division.

"Dungannon have shown great faith in me. It is my first role but I feel as if sometimes experience is over-rated," he told BBC Sport NI.

"If you understand the game, it doesn't matter what age you are or where you are at. The most important thing is understanding the game and putting those thoughts and principles into your play.

"I impressed them enough for them to offer me the job and hopefully now I can deliver."

"I've always been interested in getting into management and once I met with the club it just felt right,"

"I liked what the chairman had to say about his ambitions for the club and felt it was the right time for me to make the step into management. It seems to be the right move for me."
