Former Hezbollah MP Suspends Party Activity Following Criticism of Daughter’s Lavish Wedding

Former Hezbollah MP Nawwar al-Sahili announced on Sunday the suspension of his party activities, pending its leadership’s decision, following a wave of criticism over his daughter’s lavish and extravagant wedding.

Photos and videos spread on social media of the huge wedding of Sahili’s daughter, Hala, with Lebanese businessman, Firas Al-Yafi, who resides in London.

The photos sparked outrage and a campaign on social media against the party’s leaders, who are organizing and attending luxurious events at a time when the Lebanese are suffering from dire living, economic and financial crises.

In a tweet, the Hezbollah deputy said: “I attended my daughter’s wedding, which was organized by my son-in-law, and I did not realize that it would cause harm to our dear supporters. Therefore, I apologize to my family and loved ones for what happened, and I also caused unintended offense to the party that I love and belong to.”

He added: “Accordingly, I am suspending all my party activities until the leadership takes the decision, and I will abide by it no matter what.”

Al-Yafi works in the banking and financial sector. Hala is al-Sahili’s daughter from his first marriage. She lives in Britain.
