Former Hearts striker Donis Avdijaj set to sign for German club as he eyes Schalke return

Former Hearts striker Donis Avdijaj is set to join German third tier side Turkgucu Munich.

The forward endured a miserable spell at Tynecastle and failed to nail down a place in the starting XI.

The 24-year-old Kosovan international became Daniel Stendel's first signing at the club when he joined in January, however his short-term deal wasn't renewed at the end of the season.

Avdijaj started his career at Schalke and went on to play for Willem II and Trabzonspor before arriving in Edinburgh.

And he's now set to return to Germany with a new side – although it seems he wants to one day end back at the club where he started his career.

He said: "I know that there are offers from Saudi Arabia, but I don’t believe that would be a good move for me.

"Turkgucu Munich want me to sign for them and Munich is a great city.

"Of course, I would like to play for Schalke again. My heart will always be attached to this fantastic club."

The player previously spoke about how he values his time in Scotland, despite not quite making the grade at Tynecastle.

He said: “I’m not unhappy with what happened at Hearts. I could have stayed at Trabzonspor, but I wanted to play more games.

“I knew that I could get more out of myself and that’s why I took the step to Scotland and with Daniel Stendel I saw myself on the right path.

“Scotland was certainly a new environment for me, but it was worth the experience.

“I am confident enough to say that I will always find a club that wants me. There are currently discussions with other top league clubs in four different countries.

“I’ve never doubted my ability. I had twelve games at Hearts and you don’t know how things would have gone if the coronavirus hadn’t intervened.”
