Former Hearts star Ryan Stevenson joins Albion Rovers

Former Hearts striker Ryan Stevenson is one of three new signings at Albion Rovers as gaffer Brian Reid strengthens his squad for the return of League Two.

Rovers have snapped up the midfielder - who made more than 100 appearances for the Jambos over two spells in the capital - on a deal until the end of the season.

He is joined at Cliftonhill by fellow ex-Ayr United and Queen's Park midfielder Jamie McKernon, as well as former Cowdenbeath defender David Cox.

And Reid says his relationship with Stevenson, whom he has kept in touch with since their spell at Ayr United in the 2006/07 season, was key to bringing him on board.

The Rovers boss told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "It's good to get some experience in because it was badly needed.

"Hopefully with their knowledge and everything else they can help the younger boys and do well for us.

"I had Ryan Stevenson way back when I was Ayr United manager, so Steveo and I have kept in touch and we've got a good relationship.

"He's a top player, a very good professional and a very good person.

"I know he's coming here in his twilight years at 36, but he's still a very fit guy and he's a very good addition to the squad.

"Jamie McKernon is another one I had at Ayr, in on loan from St Mirren when he was a youngster.

"I know the type of player and person he is so he'll be a good asset.

"David Cox isn't one I've worked with before, but I have managed against him and I know the kind of qualities he will bring."

Defenders Paul Gallacher and Mark Sideserf, who both joined from Pollok in January, have started training with the club and Reid says he isn't finished adding to his options.

He said: "We've got a centre-half lined up that we are looking to bring and I'd be looking to get another goalkeeper in after losing Ryan Goodfellow [who was released and joined Edinburgh City]."

Rovers are back in training ahead of the return to matches on March 20, but League One and Two have yet to come to an agreement with the SPFL on the makeup of the remainder of the campaign.

Members clubs are seeking a 22-game season with a split option, but the SPFL have said they have severe reservations on this and are awaiting assurances on the play-offs - which would be delayed by two weeks under that proposed format.

Fixtures, of course, are also unknown with nine days until the first game back.

Reid, whose side are second from bottom in League Two, added: "Every other manager is the same situation, but hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

"There's meetings daily from what I understand but I don't think they've come to an agreement yet.

"We don't know how many games we are playing yet so hopefully that gets sorted out soon."
