Former Hearts player earns Scotland call after strike duo pull out ahead of National league games

Former Hearts player Callum Paterson has been called up to the Scotland squad after strike duo Oli McBurnie and Lawrence Shankland pulled out.

Steve Clarke opted to give the Cardiff City utility man a call after being left short on attacking options for the upcoming Nations League double header against Israel and the Czech Republic.

Shankland has been struggling with an ankle injury although no reason has yet been given for McBurnie's call off.

Paterson can play right back and centre forward although you have to imagine Clarke is planning to use in in striking role. The player has also featured heavily in the centre of midfield for his club.

The 25-year-old left Hearts in 2017 before joining the Welsh side. He'll get his Championship season underway when Cardiff host Sheffield Wednesday after the international break on Saturday 12 September.

Scotland face Israel on Friday, 4 September before taking on the Czech Republic on Monday, 7 September.
