Former Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov living in submarine after surfacing in freezing Russian village

Controversial Vladimir Romanov has revealed he has spent the last of his money turning a submarine into a home.

The ex-Hearts owner has been in hiding in recent years with Lithuanian authorities wanting to speak to him.

Allegations of fraud, embezzlement, money laundering and much more were aimed at him before he took refuge in Russia.

And now he’s surfaced in the small village of Nikulskaya which has a population of just 17.

He’s living on a submarine that he served on while a member of the Russian army and he insists he is broke.

Reported by the Daily Record, the 73-year-old said: "I lost everything, my own private bank, factories, football clubs, but I've spent the last of my money on this submarine.

"It cost me 500,000 dollars to refurbish it. That's my money gone now.

"This submarine was the one I served on 55 years ago.

"My plan was to live on it and also turn it into a tourist attraction - a fantastic museum. However, the rest of the villagers wouldn't let me do that, so I just live on it now."

Romanov took over at Hearts in 2005 and was in charge until 2013 when the Tynecastle club entered administration.

They won the Scottish Cup twice during his reign and split Celtic and Rangers in the league.
