Former Hearts goalkeeper set to link up with ex-Tynecastle boss after sealing Championship move

Former Hearts goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald has joined Championship side Raith Rovers on a free transfer.

The ex-Tynecastle stopper departed Kilmarnock at the end of last season and will link up with his former boss in Gorgie, John McGlynn on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old had been linked with a return to his former club before they completed the signing of Craig Gordon from Celtic.

MacDonald made more than 130 appearances for Hearts after coming through the Tynecastle academy, starting the Scottish Cup final over Hibernian in 2012.

He moved on to Falkirk in 2014 before arriving at Rugby Park a year later where he played 133 times before heading out on loan to Alloa Athletic last season.

He joins the Stark's Park club after they were promoted back to the second tier when the season was halted early amid the coronavirus pandemic.

MacDonald said he was excited at the prospect of working with McGlynn again, adding: "John was my first professional coach when I went in to Hearts at 16/17, so that was a big pull for me.

"Working with John in the past, he is obviously a fantastic coach and first and foremost, I want to enjoy my football, so that was a big draw."

Rovers are slated to kick off their Championship campaign in October when the leagues below the Premiership resume.
