Former Hearts boss Daniel Stendel set for return to football as French club offer coaching role

Former Hearts boss Daniel Stendel is set to join the coaching staff at French side Nancy, according to reports.

The 46-year-old was linked with a move back to Germany with another former club - second tier St Pauli - last year, but the club appointed a different man to lead them in the Bundesliga 2 instead.

Stendel remains without a club since being released by the Gorgie outfit following their controversial relegation to the Scottish Championship when Robbie Neilson was appointed in his place.

However, he is now set for a return to the game, though will not be at the forefront of the dugout and will instead link up with the backroom team of Jean-Louis Garcia at the Ligue 2 outfit.

Nancy are owned by the same Chinese businessman as former club Barnsley, who terminated Stendel’s deal prior to him arriving in the Capital.

He won just five of 17 games at the helm before the season was halted by the coronavirus outbreak, but did lead the Jambos to the semi-final of the Scottish Cup by dumping Rangers out of the competition.

He also claimed a commanding 3-1 win over city rivals Hibs at Easter Road, further endearing him to the Tynecastle faithful.

Stendel opted to forgo his wages when the pandemic shut down the game, but later received an apology from the Gorgie club after a clause ending his tenure in the event of relegation from the top flight was activated without being properly communicated to him at home in Germany.

Nancy are hovering just above the relegation zone in the French second tier and have managed just one win in their last five game.

That was against fellow strugglers Pau, who are five points behind the club in 19th.

Nancy face another crucial clash at the bottom of the division on Saturday when they take on USL Dunkerque.
