Former Hearts and Celtic coach becomes assistant manager at Dundee United

Former Hearts manager Stephen Frail has joined Dundee United as assistant to Micky Mellon.

The 50-year-old - who had two spells as caretaker manager at Tynecastle - fills the void left by Lee McCulloch at Tannadice, with the former Rangers star now set to link up with Robbie Neilson at the Gorgie club.

Frail also coached at Celtic and was in charge of Northern Ireland's under-17 and under-19 sides before accepting the role with United.

He will now return to Scotland for the first time since leaving Lennoxtown in 2015 after spending six years as a reserve and youth team coach in Glasgow.

Frail was appointed joint manager of Hearts in March 2007 alongside Anatoly Korobochka following the departure of Valdas Ivanauskas, however was promoted into full caretaker charge in January 2008 after a drop off in form left the Jambos 10th in the top flight.

He held on to that position until July when he was replaced by Csaba László before leaving the club to coach elsewhere.

Mellon was appointed United boss earlier this month following Neilson's shock return to Tynecastle.

McCulloch also departed the club shortly afterwards and looks likely to follow his former manager to Gorgie.
