Former Hearts and Airdrie hero blasts 'ludicrous' void SPFL suggestions

Former Hearts and Airdrie favourite Alan Lawrence reckons it would be a hammer blow to the Diamonds if the League One season has to be written off.

The former Broomfield forward and coach urged Scottish football bosses to find a way to finish the current league season.

Lawrence, who has also turned out for Hearts, reckons there should be no relegations or promotions until the campaign is completed after the Scottish football shutdown.

The 57-year-old also insists trophies should not be handed out to teams who are currently top of the division.

Hearts manager Daniel Stendel (SNS Group)

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport: “The way I look at that is, Hearts have been poor this season; everyone understands that.

“There are games to be played still, so you can’t relegate a team.

“That’s a big no-no from me right away.

“There are people saying as well that Celtic should be given the title because they are clear just now – it’s ludicrous.

“Teams should have to finish their season if they are going to be promoted or relegated.

“From an Airdrie point of view, I always thought for a club of their size, even when I was assistant there, that the club should be in the second tier or in the play-off places at least.

“They are finally in there again so it would be a disaster for Airdrie if the league was abandoned now.

“They have the play-off games and still have a chance to win the title.

“They need to finish the season; if that means playing less games next season that’s what happens.

“The issue with that is are teams going to want to play less games against the biggest teams. Say you play the big teams twice and play a half season, would they take that revenue?

“I don’t envy the people who have to work this all out.”
