Former Gwynedd hotel has price cut in bid to find a new buyer

A former historic hotel in Gwynedd has had its price cut in an attempt to find a buyer.

Bontddu Hall, between Dolgellau and Barmouth, was once one of the grandest hotels in North Wales and previous guests included Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain and actor Richard Burton. It closed as a hotel in 2004 and turned into a private residence sat on the banks of Afon Mawddach.

But in June 2020 the mansion was badly damaged by a serious fire that saw a woman sadly die. Later that year it went on the market with Christie and Co commercial agents. with a price tag of £950,000.

Now the owner has slashed £100,000 off the asking price in a bid to secure a sale. Christie and Co said: "The former Bontddu Hall Hotel was originally built in 1873 of stone construction and has hosted a number of famous guests over the years including Sir Winston Churchill.

"Unfortunately the property has recently suffered a serious fire and is no longer able to be utilised as a property in its given state although the structure, in part, still stands. Therefore, the opportunity is being offered to the market predominantly for redevelopment of the existing hall, or for an incoming buyer to develop as required, subject to relevant planning permissions and consents from the local authority.

They added: "Bontddu Hall Hotel once traded as a successful business and could again. However, due to the condition of the building it would need to be completely re-built before any business could trade. The site offers a range of possibilities for a buyer depending on their requirements."

Bontddu Hall is on for £850,000 with Christie and Co.
