Former Greaves store on Sauchiehall Street to be turned into apartment hotel under new plans

The former home of Greaves Sports could be turned into an apartment hotel under new plans.

Developers are looking at the four-storey shop on Sauchiehall Street which sits beside where the former Victoria's nightclub stood before it was destroyed by fire.

The store closed back in 2017 due to a lack of trading after being part of the Greaves family business since 1960.

The building was undamaged by the Sauchiehall Street fire which was 'probably caused by an electrical fault' in the roof space above Holland & Barrett and resulting in two neighbouring buildings being demolished.

Lauder's bar, on the ground floor of 82 Sauchiehall Street, was forced to close for over a year following the blaze but reopened their new refurbished bar in 2019.

Under the new plans, a hotel with 'generous' sized rooms with cooking facilities will be created inside the existing building but a fifth floor will be created for additional space.

A planning statement explains that a change of use from retail to leisure and hospitality is in response to the challenging conditions experienced by the retail sector in city centres.

Developers say they're looking to "secure the long-term future of the Grade B listed building" which is said to be in a poor state of repair.

The historic fabric of the building will be preserved but a 'complete regeneration' of the interior space will be undetaken.

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council.
