Former Grambling State RB Martez Carter gets another shot with Saints

The New Orleans Saints re-signed running back Martez Carter on Feb. 5. Carter previously spent time on the Saints’ practice squad once rookie draft pick Boston Scott was poached by the Philadelphia Eagles. Carter was waived from the practice squad late in the season, but he’s returned to the team to kick off the 2019 offseason.

Carter first announced the transaction from his official Twitter account, and Rod Walker of the Advocate confirmed the signing:

Carter agreed to a reserve/futures contract, which means he will have a spot on the 90-man offseason roster and little else. He’ll be competing with other players for one of 53 coveted slots on the opening-day roster in September.

The Saints will have a spot open up in their running backs rotation with starter Mark Ingram scheduled to test free agency in March. Alvin Kamara remains the starter, and Dwayne Washington showed some nice moves in limited action. But Carter will have as good an opportunity as anyone else to stick on the roster.
