Former goalkeeper Shay Given reveals regrets about Robinho's Man City career

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has revealed that he was disappointed that the club failed to get more out of former record-signing Robinho during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Following the agreed takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group, City brought the Brazilian to the Premier League from Spanish giants Real Madrid, signing him for a British transfer record at the time of £32.5million.

The versatile attacker, who was also wanted by Chelsea at the time, arrived in England and was greeted with no shortage of excitement after impressing in Spain for Madrid.

However, the Brazilian, who is now 37, proved to be hit-and-miss during his time at the club, scoring just 16 goals in 53 appearances, before leaving in 2010 to join Italian outfit AC Milan.

Ultimately, Robinho's time at City did not live up to expectation and former City shot-stopper Given has now revealed how frustrating it was, highlighting just how much talent his former City team-mate had within his locker.

Given told the Open Goal Podcast : "It was mad because, obviously, he had come from Real Madrid for a record fee; 30 something million, like. He was really skilful and I just wish we could have got a little bit more out of him.

"It was almost like he was a little bit too laid back, if you know what I mean? Maybe not too laid back, but he had so much skill and ability.

"In games, at times, he would turn it on and then in others he would go missing. We knew he was a brilliant player, but knew he just needed to get that little bit more involved."

Robinho's first season at City was impressive to say the least, scoring 15 goals in all competitions and claiming nine assists. His second season with City, however, did not prove to be as lucrative, scoring just once in 14 appearances.
