Former Glasgow Uni scientist passes away in Mexico following friend's fundraiser

Tributes have been pouring in for a former Glasgow University scientist who died in hospital in his native Mexico.

Hector Diaz Albiteris, 43, passed away in the city of Villahermosa with Scottish wife Morvyn and brother Luis by his side.

He had returned there in 2018 with his wife to fulfil his dream of being an investigative scientist in his home country, having previously spent time working at both Glasgow Uni and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Medics had placed him in a medically induced coma after he fell seriously ill last month, suffering from acute pancreatitis, fluid in his lungs and an Acute Kidney Injury.

Hector's friend Alex Bowie, who had launched a fundraiser to pay for his private medical costs, informed friends of the devastating news, the Daily Record reports.

He wrote: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we are writing to let you know that Hector sadly passed away this morning in Villahermosa. His beloved wife, his ‘media naranja’ (half orange) Morvyn was by his side and fighting for him until the very end. His brother Luis was also there.

"There are no words adequate enough to describe how we are feeling right now. We have lost not only a Husband, Son, Brother and friend, but an incredible human being with an incredible mind and spirit. He gave so much kindness, love and attention to everyone he met. We are sure that you will all be remembering him fondly. Morvyn said today that "my husband, my partner, my sun has left us. My heart is broken"."

His Father, Hector said: "Te amamos por siempre mi niño adorado. Descansa en paz." (translation: We love you forever my adored son. Rest in peace).

An online memorial page has been created in Hector's name here.
