A former Glasgow University scientist is in a medically induced coma after suffering multi-organ failure in Mexico.
Tropical diseases specialist Hector Diaz Albiter fell ill in the city of Villahermosa on January 27.
He suffered acute pancreatitis, fluid in his lungs and an Acute Kidney Injury.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and developed cardiac problems.

Medics placed him in a medically induced coma in a bid to save his life after his organs began to shut down.
He is currently on dialysis.
His devastated Scots wife Morvyn, who moved to his native country with him in 2018, says when the couple arrived at their local hospital they were told they had no beds left.
She was forced to move Hector to a private health facility but his health insurance will only cover the cost of his medical care for one week.

She is desperately trying to raise £50,000 to pay for his treatment in a bid to save his life.
Friend Alex Bowie has set up a Go Fund Me page which has raised almost £18,000 in 24 hours.
Alex released a statement on the page on behalf of Morvyn and other loved ones.
It reads: "Our friend Hector is a scientist investigating tropical diseases in Villahermosa, Tobasco, Mexico.
"He moved there in 2018 with his wife Morvyn to fulfil his dream of being an investigative scientist in his home country after previously working at the University of Glasgow, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio De Janeiro and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

"Sadly, on January 27, Hector became seriously unwell.
"He developed acute pancreatitis, fluid in his lungs and an Acute Kidney Injury.
"He had cardiac problems and required intubation.
"He is currently ventilated in a medically induced coma and on dialysis.
"Hector is in multi organ failure and critically unwell.
"Despite arriving at the public hospital, due to lack of bed space, they were unable to treat him and he had to be admitted to a private hospital.

"Hector's health insurance, through his work, provide only up to one million Mexican pesos coverage, just over £35,000, but the gravity of his illness means that this will only last about a week in intensive care.
"Hector desperately needs help to pay for his continued treatment if he is to have a chance of surviving."
Friends and family, both in Scotland and Mexico, have donated and sent well wishes in their droves.
One wrote: "Dear friend we love you!
“I’m sure that everything is gonna be ok!!!"
Another added: "Every little helps.
"God bless!"
A third commented: "We got you and love you, Hector and Morvyn.
"Concentrate on getting better."
