A former care home in Carntyne will be transformed into serviced apartments if new plans are approved.
Plans to convert the former Alexandra Court care home into short-term lets — with a maximum stay of 90 days — have been submitted to Glasgow City Council.
The firm behind the scheme, Commercial Connexions, would provide 58 flats as well as a gym, TV room and sauna in the Edinburgh Road building.
The planning application, submitted on behalf of the company, stated: “The proposed change of use of this vacant care centre will see a redundant building transformed into quality serviced apartments which will contribute to the ever increasing demand within the city for this type of accommodation.”
Alexandra Court, which was owned by Barchester, shut in December 2018, with residents required to relocate. The home, built in 1992, had more than 50 residents prior to the closure.
The plans state that, following a strategic review, Barchester had decided the “premises no longer met” its “portfolio requirements” as it was “focussing on alternative care markets”.
If approved, the new apartments would have a live-in concierge and numerous “break out areas where guests can meet and chat over a coffee”.
“Given the residential location and the previous use, the building lends itself to being converted into some form of residential accommodation, in this instance, serviced apartments” the plans add.
“The idea is to deliver a quality network of serviced apartments with live-in warden, supplemented by a range of ancillary services and facilities, which include a gymnasium, TV room, sauna, fully equipped laundry/press as well as a high standard of fixtures and fittings throughout.”
The developer said the project has been designed “more along the lines of a hotel” and will “ensure a pleasurable and enjoyable stay for all who use the complex”.
There would be a daily cleaning regime and all bookings would need to be made online, with rooms accessible via a code which would be supplied when booking.
“Both the main entrance door and the individual rooms will only be accessible by code, and these will be available on confirmation of booking.”
