Former Gartcairn boss Jamie McKenzie targets return to football as East Kilbride gaffer

Former Gartcairn boss Jamie McKenzie is in for the East Kilbride manager’s job – and insists he’s the man to guide them back to the top.

Applications for the vacant manager’s role at K-Park closed on Friday, with the club expected to conduct interviews in the next week.

The defending Lowland League champions have endured a torrid season under Stuart Malcolm and caretaker boss Jim Paterson, who quit last month.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "I've put my name forward to be considered.

"I've been fairly successful in the Junior game and putting East Kilbride back to the top of the league is the kind of big challenge I'd like to take on.

"I've had a couple of offers from elsewhere, but, no disrespect to the clubs that did approach me, they would have been a step backwards.

"For the next step in my career, I want to push myself.

"There's definitely scope to improve the team and hopefully the person to do that is me.

"The last Kilby boss to prove a success having made the step up from the Juniors was Martin Lauchlan.

Gartcairn lifted the West Region League One trophy last term under McKenzie (David Rankin)

Lauchlan arrived at K-Park from Rossvale in March 2016 and took Kilby to within a penalty shootout of promotion in the SPFL play-off final the following season.

McKenzie added: "When Martin Lauchlan was at the club, you saw how well they did, but other managers haven't been able to reach that level for whatever reason.

"I've got good contacts that can help bring top players in and get the team back to the top again.

"There's a lot of talent in the squad, but sometimes you need a fresh face with fresh ideas to change things.

"I've watched the club's reserve teams a couple of times against Airdire and Albion Rovers this season and there's a lot of good young players coming through as well."
