Amazon's latest venture into video game adaptations will be the iconic Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, and a Game of Thrones star is set to join the fray.
Sophie Turner, best known for her portrayal as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and Jean Grey in a handful of X-Men movies, will be the latest to take up the mantle as the adventurous heroine in Prime Video's Tomb Raider, Variety confirmed today.

"I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft," Turner said in the announcement, which came after rumors of her casting had circulated. "She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking."
Phoebe, of course, is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer, alongside co-showrunner Chad Hodge. They are all staking their reputation on Turner, who is the third actress to play Croft after Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in several films.
"It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving," Waller-Bridge said. "Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…"
Prime Video is busy with several video game IPs on its streaming service. The second season of Fallout will premiere later this year, but the company is also working on live-action series versions of Mass Effect, God of War, and Warhammer.
I'm personally not totally sold on Turner as an action star, and if there's anything Lara Croft is good for, it's some wild, wholesale action sequences where her body is put on the line and beaten around for the good of some random artifact somewhere. For now, I'll remain optimistic, though.
There's no current timetable for the show's film schedule or release.
