PITTSBURGH — Former Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins signed a futures deal with the Steelers following a visit on Thursday, the team announced.
Haskins, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 draft, was released by Washington last month before the season ended. In two seasons with Washington, Haskins was 3-10 as a starter and finished last season with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Haskins recently signed with agents Cedric Saunders and Brian Levy after some off-field issues in Washington contributed to his release by head coach Ron Rivera.
“I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways,” Rivera said in a statement when he released Haskins.
Haskins was stripped of his captaincy and fined for a COVID-19 violation last month after a video surfaced of a maskless Haskins at his girlfriend’s birthday party that included strippers.
Haskins was Washington’s starter for the first four games of the season before he was benched for Kyle Allen. He regained the starting job late in the season when Alex Smith was injured, but Washington lost both of the games he started.
The Steelers have two other quarterbacks under contract for next season: starter Ben Roethlisberger and backup Mason Rudolph. Josh Dobbs, who served as the third-string quarterback last season, is an unrestricted free agent.
After being released by Washington, Haskins went unclaimed through waivers and is now a free agent and eligible to sign with any team.
Also on Thursday, ESPN reported former Bengals head coach Hue Jackson interviewed with Tomlin for the vacant offensive coordinator position. Quarterbacks coach Matt Canada remains a candidate to fill that position.
