A former Labor staffer in Canberra has been charged with sexual offences against a second woman after a brief appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Alexander Matters, 20, was charged with two counts of rape last month after an alleged incident in April.

He was sacked shortly afterwards from his job in the office of federal Labor MP David Smith, who represents the ACT electorate of Bean.

The court heard Mr Matters is a second-year law student at the Australian National University.

Police began investigating in August when a woman went to police with a complaint about an incident that occurred in April.

Mr Matters was brought into court on a Saturday morning in September after a police search of his home in Acton.

He was initially referred to the Canberra Hospital for a psychiatric report but was back in court a day later, and released on bail.

He faced court with his lawyer by videolink, and was charged with another count of rape, and with committing an act of indecency.

Police said the new charges were laid after a second woman came forward about an alleged incident in May.

Mr Matters has indicated he will plead not guilty to all charges.

His bail has been continued on strict conditions and he will return to court next month.
