Former favourite in beach training following Newcastle United release

Christian Atsu has returned to Ghana following his release from Newcastle United but far from taking a break, he's working hard to ensure he's fit for the new season.

The winger is now on the lookout for a new club after five years at Newcastle and has been training on the beach - doing drills with friends.

He's been filmed alongside fellow professional footballers Bernard Mensah and Isaac Hemans - working on his control and speed ahead of what will be a busy few months proving his fitness to potential suitors.

Atsu returned to his homeland with dozens upon dozens of football boots - including some donated by Toon captain Jamaal Lascelles, which will be given to children through the winger's foundation.

Upon the news he was leaving United, Atsu posted a message to fans: "I just want to say a big thank-you to everyone who is part of the Newcastle United family.

"Thank you to the Toon Army fans, a lot of who I've met around the city.

"I will never forget my time in the North East and for sure I will follow the results every week.

"Thank you my Geordie staff, players and fans, it's been a pleasure."
