Former FAI chief John Delaney replaced in UEFA youth role

John Delaney has lost a top seat in UEFA in the latest blow for the former FAI chief executive.

The controversial Waterford man has been replaced as chairperson of Uefa’s Youth and Amateur Football Committee by former Polish international Zbigniew Boniek.

Delaney became the second Irishman, after Dundalk's Des Casey in 1994, to hold a seat at the European football's top table after his election to UEFA's Executive Committee two years ago.

But while the 51-year-old still holds a seat on the committee, he has lost his chairperson role, as the blowback over the FAI's financial affairs continues.

This may not be surprising as the former FAI chief did not appear at the Under-17 European Championships in May when they were held in Ireland.

Instead Noel Mooney attended the final in Tallaght before being named as the new head of the FAI.

And Delaney was absent from UEFA's last meeting in Baku at the end of May when its 2019-23 committee and expert panels were approved by the Executive Committee.

UEFA explained to the Irish Mirror that "based on proposals submitted by the President, the Executive Committee elect the Chairman, one or more Vice-Chairmen and the members of each Committee for a four-year term."

Delaney's demotion came into force on Monday and follows a marathon FAI press briefing last month where reporters were told that any queries relating to Delaney would be ignored.

The former FAI chief has effectively been placed on gardening leave pending an ongoing internal review since April.
