Former FAI boss John Delaney given deadline to cooperate with probe into football body

Former FAI boss John Delaney is to be asked to make himself available for interview in the late spring by the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement.

Officers would prefer he returned home from his new London base to answer allegations made against him over his running of Ireland’s football governing body.

But alternatively they have no problem flying to the UK to meet, Covid permitting, and to do the interview there.

If Mr Delaney refuses to do either, they say they will seek his extradition.

An ODCE source said: “We want to interview Mr Delaney in the next few months. He has been told we will meet him in London or Dublin, whatever suits.

“We expect him to fully co-operate with the investigation. If he refuses to be interviewed we will have no choice but to seek his extradition.”

The Director of Corporate Enforcement Ian Drennan has refused to comment on any individual case while investigations are ongoing. The former FAI chief has been running a number of nursing homes for a friend in the British capital.

Mr Delaney has given no indication to the ODCE what he would prefer to do.

He denies he has done anything wrong during his term in charge of the FAI and claims the organisation would have gone bankrupt years ago only for the multi-million euro commercial deals he brought in.

Both Mr Delaney and the ODCE have spent the last year arguing over which of his 280,000 FAI files and emails are admissible in the investigation.

He claims many are private and privileged and therefore should not be used as evidence.

The High Court appointed an independent barrister to adjudicate on the issue and the dispute is expected to be resolved by January 11.

The ODCE also claimed Mr Delaney was deliberately trying to impede the probe, which he denied.
