Two-times Formula One champion and double Le Mans 24 Hours winner Fernando Alonso will compete in the first edition of the Ula Neom Rally that kicks off next week.

The race is one round of the Saudi Desert Rally Championship. The Ula Neom Rally will be held on November 4-9.

The event is organized by the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation, headed by Prince Khalid bin Sultan al-Faisal, and with the support of the General Sports Authority.

Alonso, 38, was Formula One champion in 2005 and 2006. He retired in 2018. The Spaniard is seeking to win the Indianapolis 500 to complete the so-called Triple Crown of Motorsport, after winning the other two parts at Le Mans and in Formula One.

Alonso will also enter next January’s Dakar Rally with Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer confirmed last month.

The Dakar Rally has come a long way since its origins as a race from Paris to Senegal, with the 2020 edition taking place in Saudi Arabia for the first time after moving from South America.

It will be held in the Kingdom from January 5-17.
