Former exclusive private girls' school teachers accused of sexually abusing students in 1980s

Harry Schmitz is charged with sexually abusing two Penrhos students and sexually assaulting another.

Two former teachers at a private girls school will be pleading not guilty to charges of sexually abusing two students more than 30 years ago.

Harry Schmitz, 68, and Jay Walsh, 72, were teachers at Penrhos College, in the Perth suburb of Como in the 1980s when they allegedly abused the girls, who were aged between 14 and 16.

Mr Schmitz is also facing charges of sexually assaulting a third student, and a total of eight charges including rape and defilement by a guardian.

Mr Walsh is facing four charges including carnal knowledge of a female by a guardian.

He had also been facing three counts of unlawful and indecent assault, but those charges were discontinued in court today.

Both men were charged last week by detectives from the child abuse squad after an investigation into alleged historical child sexual abuse by former teachers.

Police said at the time the students were not alleged to have been abused at the same time.

Both men made their first appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court today, with the police prosecutor applying for the charges to ultimately be ferried to the District Court.

The application was not opposed by either man's lawyer, and they both told the court all of the charges against their clients would be defended.

Mr Schmitz and Mr Walsh were released on bail until their next appearance in court in October.
