Former Everton star Gareth Barry recalls Liverpool game that left a 'sour taste'

Gareth Barry has recalled how Liverpool’s late equaliser in his first Merseyside derby for Everton still leaves a “sour taste” in his mouth.

Barry joined the Blues on loan from Manchester City on deadline day in the summer of 2013, and made his debut against Chelsea at Goodison Park in his side’s next Premier League outing.

The midfielder quickly established himself in the heart of Everton’s midfield and just two months after joining was lining up in his first Merseyside derby against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Goodison.

Daniel Sturridge's late equaliser rescued a point for Liverpool after a classic six-goal thriller in which both sides led.

Philippe Coutinho gave Rodgers’ side an early lead only for Kevin Mirallas to cancel it out after just eight minutes.

Luis Suarez then restored Liverpool's advantage before the half-time interval before Romelu Lukaku scored two goals in ten second half minutes to hand his side the lead with eight minutes remaining.

However, Sturridge struck in the final minute of normal time and it is a goal that still haunts Barry to this day.

“It was my first season at Everton and my first taste of a Merseyside derby,” he told BT Sport’s Early Kick Off show when recalling the game.

“Both clubs had started the season really well, and I remember the atmosphere being brilliant.

“The game turned out to be a classic, too. To be involved in them games they are fond to look back on.

“But when I look back at how late they equalised it always leaves a little sour taste in my mouth.”
