Everton pay tribute as Gareth Barry retires from football

Former Everton player Gareth Barry has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

The experienced star made the move to Goodison Park from Manchester City in the summer of 2013, initially joining the Blues on loan.

From that point on, the Hastings-born midfielder quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Goodison Park in Roberto Martinez's first season in charge of the club - starting with a fantastic block from Chelsea's Samuel Eto'o on his debut for the club.

The transfer was made permanent the following summer and Barry continued his strong performances at the heart of defensive midfield for Everton.

Everton paid tribute to Barry by tweeting, "All the best in retirement, Gareth Barry!

"Congratulations on a magnificent career and thank you for your time with the Toffees. "

He made 155 appearances in all competitions for the Blues until leaving the club in 2017 to join West Brom.

Barry holds the record for the most appearances in Premier League history with 653, ahead of Ryan Giggs on 632.
