Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman mobbed by angry fans after Barcelona's loss to Real Madrid in El Clasico

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman had his car surrounded by a group of angry Barcelona supporters as he attempted to leave the Nou Camp following his side's 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Koeman has not enjoyed a strong spell with the Catalan giants, with Barcelona currently ninth in La Liga - their worst start to a league season in over 30 years.

This, after Barcelona finished third last season - behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Barca came into El Clasico having won their last two games against Valencia and Dinamo Kiev, respectively, with a win over rivals Real potentially catapulting them up the league whilst building momentum heading into a crucial part of the season.

But in the first El Clasico back at full capacity following the pandemic, Barcelona put on a poor showing in front of their home fans, with David Alaba strike giving Madrid the lead in the 32nd minute, stunning the stadium into temporary silence.

The second-half saw Barca unable to manage an equaliser, and on 93 minutes Lucas Vazquez effectively ended the game as a contest with a scrambled finish - Sergio Aguero would score a consolation for Barca with one of the final kicks of the game.

The Barcelona fans had passionately supported their team with a stream of constant songs in a deafening atmosphere.

After the game, things turned ugly.

Koeman was spotted leaving in his Audi and whilst some fans simply stopped for a selfie, others banged on the bonnet and shouted abuse.

One could be heard yelling "Get out now," while another added "Get to the street!"

Koeman eventually managed to get through the rabble and drive away, and fortunately it looked as though no serious damage had been done to his vehicle.

Although it certainly wasn't the majority of spectators behaving in such a manner, it will do little to play down speculation linking Koeman with the sack in the near future.

President Joan Laporta has recently given the Dutchman a vote of confidence, but many are of the opinion that he will soon be axed if a better option comes along.

Speaking after the game, Koeman said: "I am disappointed with the result but the team tried until the last second. We didn't create many clear opportunities. It was an even match but in the end the small details proved key.

"It is difficult to find positives from losing at home to Madrid, but I liked the attitude of the players and the fans.

"There is another game on Wednesday, the season is very long so we will keep fighting."
