Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman discloses Barcelona contract clause and admits switch is 'possibility'

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted it is a 'possibility' he could join Barcelona next summer with a clause in his Netherlands contract allowing his departure to the Camp Nou in 2020.

Koeman became a club legend in Spain during a six-year spell between 1989-1995 when he lifted four La Liga titles and a European Cup.

The 56-year-old was assistant manager of Barcelona from 1998-2000 before landing his first head coach role at Vitesse. He has since had spells at Benfica, Southampton and Everton before being appointed by his native Netherlands in 2018.

With Koeman set to guide the Oranje to the 2020 European Championships next summer, speculation has linked him with a return to Spain to replace the under-pressure Ernesto Valverde.

Valverde has won consecutive La Liga titles since arriving in 2017 but successive capitulations in the Champions League - plus an indifferent start to the season in which the champions picked up just seven points from their opening five matches - has left him open to criticism.

“[Joining Barcelona] is a possibility, but only after Euro 2020,” Koeman told reporters ahead of the Netherlands' showdown with Northern Ireland tomorrow.

“I don’t know if I’ll keep [talking about the Barcelona job] in the future because it’s a bit strange to speak about the possibility of going to the club while you’re the Netherlands coach.”

Koeman was sacked by Everton in October 2017 after less than 18 months in charge.
