Joleon Lescott has discussed the unteachable quality Jarrad Branthwaite possesses after his Everton breakthrough.
The youngster was brought to Goodison Park in January, becoming Carlo Ancelotti 's first signing as Blues manager after moving to Merseyside from Carlisle United.
After impressing for the under-23s, the centre-back was given his opportunity with the senior side in the closing matches of the season as both Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate were ruled out through injury.
And those displays showed a lot of qualities one particular former Everton man was happy to see.
Lescott told the Football Index Podcast : "I was very impressed with young Jarrad Branthwaite when he came in at the end of the season.
"He showed so much composure and that’s something you can’t teach.
"He clearly has ability on the ball to pick his passes and he obviously has the stature, it’s just a case of earning that experience and testing himself against a variety of different strikers to see how far he can go in the game."
In general it was a disappointing campaign for Everton, however.
Ancelotti oversaw an initial upturn in form after the sacking of Marco Silva, but the problems in the squad proved too tough.
The Blues finished 12th in the league and face another important transfer window to try and fashion themselves into European contenders next term.
And Lescott believes there is a clear area for his former side to improve if they do want to achieve those aims.
"I think Ancelotti has done well since he’s arrived at Everton, he has settled the club down and managed expectations. Ancelotti knows this side is a long way off where the club ultimately wants to be," he added.
"There’s no doubt that 12 th position isn’t good enough for this club and the investment that the squad has had over the last few years.
"The main issue in regards to the recruitment is that they‘ve brought a lot of the similar players in the same positions, which means they don’t have a plan B if things aren’t going well.
"I think Everton really need to sign a winger who is capable of scoring goals and providing assists if they’re to force their way back into the Europa League because Walcott and Iwobi haven’t contributed enough in those areas.
"Everton rely too heavily on Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin to score goals without much contribution from their midfield.
"With two strikers on the pitch, which is a rare sight in modern football, they need wingers who are capable of giving them opportunities to put the ball into the back of the net. I don’t think they have that at the moment."
