Former Everton man gives his verdict on Notts County's League Two relegation

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman has given his verdict on Notts County's relegation to the National League.

Notts were dumped out of League Two after a 3-1 defeat to Swindon Town on Saturday, ending a 131-year stay in the Football League.

Kane Hemmings had put the Magpies in front at the County Ground as Neal Ardley's side fought for their League status, with rivals Macclesfield Town, who Notts needed to lose, behind at home to Cambridge United.

But the tables quickly turned with Swindon notching three second-half goals and Macclesfield levelling to ensure Notts would be playing fifth-tier football next season.

And Osman, who made over 350 career appearances in the Premier League, admits that, while Notts are heading into non-league on merit, that doesn't mean it isn't a sad story.

"It really is a sad story about the oldest club in league football," ex-England international Osman said on the BBC's Final Score programme.

"To be 'This is heartbreaking' - Notts County fans react to League Two relegation is a real shame, but they are there for a reason.

"They've just not been able to perform at the levels that they set.

"They may have though that with Macclesfield being so far adrift at one point that they were OK.

"Macclesfield under Sol Campbell have had a terrific revival."
