Former Everton forward Jermaine Beckford opens up on why he chose to leave the club

Former Everton forward Jermaine Beckford has opened up on why he left the club.

After scoring 85 goals in 152 appearances for Leeds United, David Moyes and Everton came calling and secured the forward on a free transfer in the summer 2010.

Beckford went on to enjoy a colourful season on Merseyside, scoring against Liverpool at Anfield and also netting a brilliant solo effort against Chelsea on the final day of the season, ending the campaign with eight goals in all competitions.

The goal against Chelsea is the memory most Evertonians have of Beckford from his time with the club, with the forward even admitting himself in an interview with the ECHO recently how he was 100 percent convinced to go for it when he initially picking the ball up inside his own half.

But in an interview with talkSPORT on Friday morning, the Ealing-born 35-year-old expaned on the frustrations he was forced to endure at Goodison Park.

He said:“[At Everton] I was frustrated.

"I knew the first season I was there was going to be a difficult one in terms of the games and minutes played.

"But if you look at my minutes to goals ratio, I’m second behind Didier Drogba in the whole of the Premier League.

“I went from Leeds playing close to 50-odd games to playing sub-20 for Everton and it made me think I wasn’t happy just collecting a paycheck and training.

"I wasn’t happy being that guy as I want to play.

“I could have stayed and tried to fight for a place but it was very difficult at the time.”
