Former Everton forward Chloe Kelly wins European Championships for England Women

Former Everton forward Chloe Kelly fired England Women to glory in their European Championship final with Germany.

Reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area following a corner kick, the 24-year-old poked home from close range to send Wembley wild.

Kelly, who became the hero for Sarina Weigman's side, spent two years on loan with the Blues between 2016 and 2018 and made Everton her permanent home between 2018 and 2020 after a successful spell with the team. Introduced in the 64th minute of the match, her goal proved to be the difference between the teams.

Ella Toone had opened the scoring for the Lionesses shortly after the hour mark courtesy of a well-timed lob over Germany keeper Merle Frohms but Lina Magull restored parity with a composed finish inside the area to force another 30 minutes of play.

England finished top of Group A earlier on in the tournament, winning all three of their games against Austria, Norway and Northern Ireland. Success soon followed at the quarter-final stage as Spain were defeated 2-1 at the Amex Stadium after extra-time. Sweden were the next side to succumb to a defeat in the semi-finals, suffering a heavy 4-0 loss as the Lionesses booked their place in the final.

This evening's triumph represents England Women's first piece of silverware at a major tournament, having previously finished third at the 2015 World Cup and semi-finalists at the 2017 Euros. Germany, on the other hand, had never lost a final of a major tournament prior to tonight.

Fellow ex-Everton players Alex Greenwood, Jill Scott, Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris were also involved in England's Euros-winning squad.
