Former Everton FC player Paul Gascoigne due in court today accused of sexual assault

Former Everton FC player Paul Gascoigne is due in court today accused of sexual assault.

The 52-year-old was arrested on August 20 2018, and in November British Transport Police said he had been charged with one count of sexual assault by touching, after allegedly kissing a woman while travelling on a train between York and Newcastle.

The incident is said to have taken place in Darlington, reports Chronicle Live.

He pleaded not guilty to a count of sexual assault by touching in January, and the case is now due to be heard at Teesside Crown Court.

The former midfielder, of Amy Street, Leicester, denies that any contact between himself and the woman was sexual assault.

At the hearing in January, Michelle Heeley QC, defending, said the question of the trial would come down to "whether the kissing was sexual".

Granted bail and ordered to appear in Teesside in October, Gascoigne, who is originally from Dunston, Gateshead, told the judge: "I can’t wait, I have done nothing wrong".

It's believed the trial is likely to last three or four days - we will be bringing you updates from the case throughout.
