Former Everton defender says Duncan Ferguson 'has woken up a sleeping giant' following Chelsea win

Former Everton defender Martin Keown believes Duncan Ferguson woke “a sleeping giant” after masterminding the Blues’ win over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

Everton remain on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Marco Silva on Thursday night, appointing Ferguson as caretaker boss while the club’s hierarchy consider their next options.

Ferguson kicked off his reign with a fine 3-1 win over Frank Lampard’s side that brought an end to a four-match winless streak in the Premier League, as well as lifting the Blues out of the bottom three.

And Keown believes his former team-mate changed the atmosphere inside Goodison Park with his presence on the sidelines.

“I do feel that Ferguson has woken up a sleeping giant here,” the former centre-back told Match of the Day on Saturday night.

“The club, the players, they all came to life. They played a 4-4-2, binned their back five, and they’re all in contact with each other right from the off. Snapping into tackles, aggressive, and it was really impressive to see.

“I’ve never seen a team change so much because you expected this against Liverpool in midweek. They were there in numbers, winning the ball and straight away moving forward. Simple but effective and they played with great energy throughout the game.

“They were really attuned to one another, only a win would do and they’re marching on again.

“Really, you have to credit the manager with this. You might ask the question what have they been doing all season but this was remarkable. Ferguson changed the atmosphere.”
