Former Everton defender outlines what fans can expect from Duncan Ferguson's side

Former Everton defender Martin Keown believes Duncan Ferguson is more than equipped to handle first team affairs at the club.

Ferguson has been placed in temporary charge for Saturday's visit of Chelsea to Goodison Park after the Blues sacked manager Marco Silva on Thursday night.

Silva’s sacking comes following after a period of intense pressure, with the Blues slipping into the relegation zone after a 5-2 hammering at the hands of Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Francis Jeffers, John Ebbrell and Alan Kelly will assist Ferguson - and Keown believes the Scot will be out to make an impression this weekend.

The latest on Everton's search for a new manager is right HERE

“I’m pretty sure he is going to want maximum effort from these players,” the former Blues centre-back told talkSPORT.

“This is a club with huge history, but are they really playing for the club and the shirt? I think he is going to get a reaction this weekend.

"He's the best header of the ball we've ever seen in the Premier League. Andy Carroll isn’t bad...but this fella was like head on a stick. It was difficult to get anywhere near him.

“If he is half as good a manager as he was player then Everton might just have someone up their sleeve here.

“I’m sure behind the scenes he has wanted this job for a long time. He has been in there employed by the football club and he will be wanting to make an impression.

“But it is about keeping a lid on that enthusiasm and getting the best out of the players. So he should be equipped to take it on.”
