Former Everton boss Ronald Koeman hospitalised after heart attack

Ronald Koeman is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

The former Southampton and Everton boss fell ill at his home in Bussum, a town 20 miles outside Amsterdam, this afternoon.

He was rushed to hospital in the Dutch capital by ambulance at 3.45pm where he underwent an angiogram that confirmed the doctors' initial diagnosis.

Koeman, 57, is being treated at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre and his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

The Dutchman, who had a glittering playing career with Groningen, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Feyenoord, is famous for his cool demeanour on the touchline.

He told Dutch media a few days ago that he was taking regular bike rides to maintain his fitness during the coronavirus lockdown.

The former defender started his coaching career on the staff of the Dutch national team in 1997 before returning to the Nou Camp the following year as assistant boss to Louis van Gaal.

He became manager of Vitesse in 2000 and also had spells in charge ofmAjax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord before arriving in the Premier League with Southampton as Mauricio Pochettino's successor in 2014.

He guided the Saints to seventh in his first season - and then went one better the following year when the south coast club qualified for Europe with their highest-ever Premier League with a sixth-placed finish.

His one full season at Goodison Park saw Everton also qualify for the Europa League.

But he was sacked in October 2017 when he failed to deliver on a £150million transfer spend.

Koeman became Holland boss six months later.

He led them to last year's inaugural Nations League, beating England in the semi-finals before losing to hosts Portugal.
