Former Everton boss Ronald Koeman 'being lined up' as new Barcelona manager

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman could be lined up as the new Barcelona manager, according to reports.

The Catalan giants look set to sack Quique Setien following their humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

A board meeting is set to take place at the Camp Nou on Monday to discuss the Barca boss’ future, although Spanish radio station Cadena COPE said club president Josep Bartomeu had told them Setien had been sacked.

And as they look for their new manager, Koeman could be the man to take over, three years on from his departure from Goodison Park.

The 57-year-old is currently manager of the Netherlands national team, having taken over in 2018 after being sacked by the Blues the previous year.

Koeman was rushed to hospital back in May with chest complaints, but is back to full health now, and could be set to return to the Camp Nou, having spent six years there as a player.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has suggested the Dutchman could oversee a “year of transition” before former midfielder Xavi, currently manager of Qatari club Al Sadd, takes over.

"The board will meet tomorrow and [Setien] will be sacked," Balague told the BBC’s Euro Leagues podcast.

"They have to choose a manager because in two weeks’ time pre-season starts - and the talk is Koeman could be the man.

"He said no to an offer in January, but this is different. I think his health situation may have played a part. Discussions may be taking place, we may hear tomorrow, but he will need to separate from the national side so there is still a wait for that to happen.

"He is a name who will, more or less, make everybody happy."
