Former Everton academy director on Ross Barkley's rise as Chelsea man prepares for Toffees reunion

As Ross Barkley prepares to face his former side Everton for the first time since joining Chelsea, it is understandable why the midfielder may feel a few nerves in the build-up to the game at Stamford Bridge.

After all, the Liverpool-born player did rise through the ranks at boyhood side Everton before a serious injury in 2017 resulted in Barkley deciding to leave the Toffees and his hometown for a fresh start in London with Chelsea.

And it seems the move is working. The 24-year-old has forced his way into Maurzio Sarri's plans thanks to his rapid development at Chelsea, which has been down to Barkley's desire and work ethic to improve as much as the coaching at the club.

It is a trait that was identified early on by the man who oversaw Barkley's development at Everton, former Toffees academy director Ray Hall, who describes the midfielder as "brave" - just like another one of Everton's former stars Wayne Rooney.

In an exclusive chat with Standard Sport's Vaishali Bhardwaj, Hall recalls the moment Everton knew they had a star on their hands when they first saw Barkley play as a youngster and why the midfielder can become one of the best players in the Premier League.

Watch the video above to see Hall speak to Standard Sport about Chelsea's rising star Barkley.
