Former England teen wonder reveals he is eligible to play for Wales

Watford midfielder Will Hughes, once dubbed an England teen wonder, has revealed he is eligible to play international football for Wales.

The former Derby ace - who joined the Hornets in 2017 - has impressed under Javi Gracia this term and hopes to feature for Watford in their FA Cup final clash with Man City at Wembley.

Such has been 23-year-old Hughes' impressive form this season, there has been talk of the youngster earning an England call-up.

And while Hughes admits he'd be "ecstatic" if he was to feature for Gareth Southgate's side in the near future, he put Ryan Giggs on red alert by revealing he also qualifies to play for Wales.

The news is bound to interest Giggs, who is keen to bolster his squad numbers further and recently capped Rotherham midfielder Will Vaulks .

Hughes played 22 times for England's under-21s, earning many of those caps under Southgate.

But he has also seen younger players like Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi leapfrog him in Southgate's pecking order for the senior Three Lions side.

"I want to be called up (for England),” Hughes said towards the end of an interview with The Times.

"I want to play. I’m massively patriotic.

"If a call-up does come, I will be ecstatic but, if they keep playing the way they are, I’ve got to watch and enjoy it.

"There are technical players coming in faster than me. [Callum] Hudson-Odoi and Jadon Sancho have technical ability as well as physical attributes. I’m not bitter about it."

But he went on to say: "I could play for Wales, my grandparents are part-Welsh, on my father’s side."

However, under FIFA rules, Hughes would not be eligible to play for Wales, with reports suggesting it was his great-grandparents that were Welsh, something the FAW explored four years ago.

Hughes was a regular in England's Under-21 side earlier on in his career and has featured 34 times in all competitions for Watford so far this term, scoring three goals.

James Lawrence, Chris Mepham and - most recently - Vaulks are among the English-born contingent in Wales' squad to feature for the national side under Giggs.

And others including Daniel James, David Brooks and Ben Woodburn were eligible to play for the Three Lions prior to committing their international futures to Wales.
