Former England striker opens up on why he would love to have played alongside Jack Clarke

Darren Bent has named Leeds United youngster Jack Clarke as a player he would have loved to have played with during his career.

The former England international, who brought an end to his career after leaving Derby County twelve months ago, believes Tottenham’s new recruit will have a career to remember.

Leeds’ academy graduate signed for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in a £9m move this summer, before returning to Elland Road on a season-long loan.

Now, the 18-year-old winger is bidding to end his time in West Yorkshire by leading Marcelo Bielsa’s side to promotion.

Bent, who turned out for Spurs on 84 occasions during a two-year spell at the club, has identified Clarke as a man he would have loved to play alongside.

When asked by Football Insider if Clarke is the type of player he would have loved to play alongside, Bent replied: “Yeah, a creative winger. A lot of the modern day wingers now are shoot first, supply second and I hate that [laughs]. As a centre forward, I can’t stand that!

“Whereas you look at when I was growing up, in my day wide men would create goals first for your centre forward and then if there’s an opportunity to shoot, then you go and get yourself goals. It’s completely changed around now, though. For me, I do like him because he does look to create first and then get himself a goal.

"He’s at the perfect club (in Tottenham) that are going to be patient with him first and foremost, he’s signed a long-term deal – it’s the exact same as when I was there, I signed five plus one.

“I’d say he’s an old school winger with modern flair. He can go past people, good with either feet, quick, quite tricky on the ball, quite elusive and as I said, likes to supply first so I really like him.”

Clarke broke on the scene last season after impressing for the Whites’ under-23s, registering two goals and two assists in 24 appearances.
