Former England striker highlights the one position where Leeds United need to strengthen this summer

Former England striker Darren Bent says Leeds United could do with beefing up their striker department should they seal promotion this season.

The Whites are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship, with just nine games of the regular season remaining.

The coronavirus outbreak has put paid to all games in England until April 30 at the very earliest, leaving an element of uncertainty about when, or even if, games will resume.

Despite that uncertainty, Bent has suggested that United need to add to their pool of forwards should they achieve their end goal of winning promotion to the Premier League.

At present, only Patrick Bamford and Jean-Kevin Augustin are the only recognised strikers at Marcelo Bielsa's disposal.

With Augustin out injured it has left the responsibilty solely on Bamford's shoulders and despite scoring 13 times this season he has come in for some criticism for his conversion rate.

Bent, who won 13 caps for his country, says that Bielsa needs to add to his forward options in the summer - but says the recruitment needs to put quality over quantity.

"Centre-forward is the one they need," Bent told FootballInsider.

"Maybe one for now and see how they get on.

“It’s a difficult job scoring goals in the Premier League, some people just can’t do it, they can’t make the step up.

“You don’t really want a Sheffield United situation.

"At one time or another they’ve had six strikers on their books and none of them have really hit the ground running.

"They’re still left with a load of strikers.

"Maybe sign a couple but also stick with what you’ve got and see what happens with them.”
