Former England star makes bold Bristol City claim that is bad news for Leeds United and Nottingham Forest

Darren Bent has backed Bristol City to make the play-offs in a prediction that would set up a semi-final against Leeds United.

Writing in the Times, the former England striker gave his thoughts on the Championship run-in, evaluating each team as a whole.

Despite the Robins' poor home form continuing with a defeat to Birmingham City on Friday evening, Bent feels they have enough about them to finish sixth in the table.

Bent's reasoning is down to the signing of Nahki Wells, alongside the fact they have Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in the same week skewing the difficulty of their run-in.

He said: "I fancy them to nick the final play-off spot despite being turned over by Birmingham City on Friday.

"Losing Josh Brownhill to Burnley last month was a blow because his energy in midfield was so influential. But they compensated by making the signing of Nahki Wells, who scored 13 times on loan for Queens Park Rangers this season.

"Wells is unselfish and works hard for the team. He can play anywhere along the frontline and will add creativity and make the difference in tight games, providing competition for Andreas Weimann.

"City play Leeds and West Brom in consecutive weeks this month but their final run of matches is less daunting.

"They end at home to Preston, when sixth place could be up for grabs."

If Bent's prediction was to come true, it would see the Robins facing Leeds United in the play-offs.

Bent has predicted Leeds to come third in the table, citing the fact that Patrick Bamford is relied upon to score goals.

Marcelo Bielsa's side would be pipped to second place by Fulham - with Bent pointing to the importance of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Bobby Decordova-Reid up front.

Nottingham Forest would miss out on automatic promotion, coming fifth and facing Brentford.

However, Bent is backing Brentford to go up through the play-offs, due to their attacking line-up.

He said: "Their attacking trio really excite me and they are why Brentford will sneak promotion via the play-offs to crown their proposed move to their new stadium next season.

"Ollie Watkins is joint-top scorer (with Mitrovic) in the league and he complements Saïd Benrahma and Bryan Mbeumo. Watkins is technically good and physically strong but what has impressed me is that he naturally takes up positions to score — the mark of a good forward.

"He was impressive last season when he caught the eye of Crystal Palace.

"Mbeumo, the 20-year-old Frenchman, has adapted remarkably quickly, with 12 goals and five assists."
