Former England manager believes Man City's Phil Foden can become the best player in the world

Phil Foden will become the best player in the world within three years if he continues his current trajectory.

That is the opinion of former England manager Glenn Hoddle, who has heaped praise on the Manchester City forward as he was assessing the potential of the current Three Lions squad.

Foden has established himself as first choice on the left for City thanks to a superb 2021, while he finally looks to be getting regular games for England after a slow start to his international career.

And Hoddle, who reflected back on Foden's Player of the Tournament contribution at the 2017 under-17 World Cup, says there is no ceiling for the City man's future.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, he said: "We've got some unbelievable players. Declan Rice is the best player in the Premier League. He's going to get better and better.

“But for me, Phil Foden in three years time could be the best player in the world. With England the way we play. He has everything.”

"He understands the game. I saw him when he was 17 when we won the World Cup and he was head and shoulders above everyone else, and that was against the South American teams. I said at the time he looked more South American than the South Americans.

"He ends up in the six yard box, he knows how to penetrate the box. He scores goals and he is intelligent. He's got everything."
