Former England man admits shock at exclusion of Barry Douglas in Leeds United side

Former England striker Darren Bent admits he is puzzled as to why Barry Douglas has struggled to gain a prominent place in Leeds United's first team.

Douglas arrived at Elland Road back in the summer of 2018 but has been reduced to a bit-part role this term.

The Scot, now aged 30, helped previous club Wolverhampton Wanderers win promotion to the Premier League, providing 14 assists on the way to the Championship title.

He was then transferred to West Yorkshire for £3million and played 27 times last season but has featured on just 13 occasions this time around.

He was Bielsa’s first signing at Elland Road but has found his game time limited this term - much to the surprise of former Aston Villa and Sunderland hitman Bent.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent admits he is scratching his head at how Douglas has struggled to gain a regular place in Bielsa's team.

“It’s not great what’s gone on there," said Bent.

"I fully expected him to go to Leeds and be a top, top player.

"But for whatever reason it’s not really happened for him.

“Why? I couldn’t tell you why but unfortunately these things happen.”

Only last month former Whites midfielder Michael Brown spoke of the difficulties that Douglas faced getting back into the side.

Brown said: "I think it’s been difficult for him because he needs a run of games.

"For lots of periods of time now we’ve seen Marcelo Bielsa play Alioski down the left-hand side and we’ve now seen Dallas come in there now."
