Former England boss Sam Allardyce on his dream of managing Man City - and how he'd do it

Sam Allardyce says it would be a 'dream' to manage Manchester City and has explained what he would do in the job.

The Premier League great has been out of work for the past two years after leaving Everton in 2018 having enjoyed success over his career at the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United - which eventually earned him an ill-fated spell as England manager.

Despite all that Allardyce has achieved in the game, he has often been derided by his critics as a manger who just plays simple, negative and defensive 'hoof' ball.

The 65-year-old has explained that he has always adapted his style of play to the players he had at his disposal and that, if he was ever in charge at City, he would only need to work on the defensive side of their game and keep their attacking play as it is.

"I played a totally different style of football at every club I've been at based on the players we had," he told TalkSport. "Because the players are individuals that have certain strengths and weaknesses.

"You have too look at those strengths and weaknesses and put a team together and put a system together that suits those players.

"So obviously in terms of Manchester City, which is the top quality of their players, it means that realistically all you have to do is work on the defensive side of the team, they've slipped up this year and it's the only reason why they haven't challenged Liverpool because defensively they haven't been as as the season before.

"They've conceded too many sloppy goals and they've scored just as many, you get to Manchester City and obviously you keep that attractive side with the quality of players that they've got.

"At the end of the day Manchester City have to defend less than any other team in the league, because they keep the ball more than any other team in the league and I think that is a lack of concentration by the team when it loses possession. Or some individual mistakes that have been made when people at the back have been asked to defend correctly 1v1 and haven't done it as well as they used to do it.

"So that area I'm sure Pep will try and tidy up this year but who wouldn't want to manage Manchester City? What a team, what a squad of players. Just a dream. Managing them on a daily basis and, the amount of games that they have to play, using the squad to its full potential."
