Former England boss makes big Gary Cahill claim amid Aston Villa and Arsenal links this summer

Sam Allardyce says former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill would be a good signing for any Premier League club this summer.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Chelsea this summer, bringing an end to seven years in west London with the Blues.

He has been linked with several Premier League clubs so far this summer, including Arsenal, Aston Villa and Burnley, while Championship side Leeds United have also been suggested as potential suitors.

But while a return to his first club Aston Villa has been mooted, there has been no movement as yet, with Dean Smith's side completing nine signings so far since gaining promotion from the Championship.

And Allardyce, who worked with Cahill during his brief stint in charge of England, said he feels that the defender would be a good signing for many clubs in the top flight.

“I can’t believe he hasn’t been picked up," Allardyce said, speaking on Talksport.

“I would sign him tomorrow. Any Premier League football club should get him. He is as fit as a fiddle."

And Allardyce believes that one of the promoted clubs would benefit from signing Cahill.

“He would be great for Aston Villa, with his experience, to help them stay in the Premier League for a couple of seasons."

Burnley are currently the 4/7 favourites to sign the experienced defender, with Arsenal 3/1 with Sky Bet to sign Cahill and Leeds priced at 8/1, with Villa currently fourth in the betting market at 10/1.
