Former Electric Circus club set to become gallery as plans get green light

The former Electric Circus nightclub next to Waverley Station is set to be transformed into a new gallery space after plans were given the green light by officials.

The neighbouring Fruitmarket Gallery wants to expand into the space occupied by the club, which closed its doors for the last time in 2017.

It aims to create a new cultural space in the former warehouse which will house performances and exhibitions.

Officials have recommended that the plans go ahead but there are no plans for regular "amplified music" performances.

The Fruitmarket Gallery set out its plan for the venue in a document to  planning officials.

They said: "This will be a new kind of space for us. A steel framed former fruit and vegetable warehouse, it matches the Fruitmarket Gallery’s space before it was converted into a ‘white cube’ for showing contemporary art.

"Our plan is to leave the space as raw as possible, resulting in a double height, materially resonant space that corresponds to the way artists work now – at scale and collaboratively, with music, theatre, dance and spoken word combining with visual art to open up the creative process to audiences."

The plans will go before Edinburgh city council's development management committee next week.

While there are no plans to reopen Electric Circus, its famous club night Magic Nostalgic will be at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.
