Former Edinburgh tax office could be transformed into huge hotel and cafe if plans go ahead

One of Edinburgh's former tax offices could be completely transformed if plans are to go ahead.

The HMRC building at Haymarket has been mentioned in a proposal of application notice, which hopes to see the former office redeveloped into a brand new complex.

In the notice, submitted on behalf of Elgin Haymarket, it reads that the site could undergo a "major redevelopment" which would see two separate buildings being constructed.

Previously occupied by the tax office and other tenants, the building at 20 Haymarket Yards would be changed into a "mixed-use" site, which would encompass a hotel and smaller office space.

In addition, plans have also noted the hope for a cafe to also be included in the development, alongside car parking and cycle facilities, electric car charging points and a landscaped area.

Full plans are yet to be submitted, however the proposals are the second major development to be put forward for the area surrounding Haymarket station.

Earlier this year in August, plans were submitted to demolish the current Rosebery House, which overlooks the station, and replace the building with a larger block of accommodation.

Residents in the surrounding area have opposed to the suggestions, which would see an eight-story block replace the current 1970s building.

With fears the new offices would be too intrusive for the area, over 170 objections were filed to the council during the consultation process.
